It doesn't matter what generation we live in, parenting teens can be a struggle.  There will always be a new fad, a latest trend or a new drug on the market (or streets).  Parenting is parenting, whether you are in the 1960's like Mad Men where many of the mom's are stay-at-home, or The Middle when mom needs to take a job to help supplement their income, or we now look at Modern Family when both mom and dad can be the same gender – yes, parenting is parenting. Parenting today can be much more challenging with the increase of technology, the use of drugs becoming increasingly more dangerous (huffing, sniffing and bagging), the sex scene starting at much younger ages, bullying on the increase and more.  where does a parent begin?  It is simple, remember to always be a parent first!  many parents believe that being their teenager's friend will help them stay in closer touch with them.  Yes, you can be their friend and their confidendant, however it is critical to be their parent first. The key to parenting, not matter what era you live in, is communication.  it starts with talking, is continues with more talking and ends with understanding.  an understanding that you and your child have discussed issues of concern and can agree or agree to disagree on certain things, such as a curfew. You will be amazed at how much better your teen will accept your boundaries if you can have open discussions.  it may not change your mind, however it shows a mutual respect.  Of course this is assuming your teen is respecting you also.  Respect is earned – and that goes for both sides. Dealing with teens can be challenging, but the rewards can be priceless.  Talk to your teen today! So, who do your parenting skills mimic?  As school opens in Duval, Clay and St. John's County on August 23rd, start talking to your teens about their upcoming school year.  let them know you are always there for them no matter what.  it is what parenting is about – being there and being involved. Communication is key! Find the time to join your local PTA or PTO, it can help you stay involved.  in North Florida, click here.   Today’s "Modern Family" – Parenting is parenting…. just be there.
